Newtown
Newtown is a suburb of Sydney’s inner west, located approximately 4 kilometres south west of the Sydney Central Business District and within the City of Sydney and Inner West Council.
The Newtown property market is characterised by its strong demand for its unique blend of urban lifestyle and community feel, which is reflected in its robust growth and relatively quick sales.
History
Newtown was established as a residential and farming area in the early 19th century, but took its suburb name from a grocery store opened there by John and Eliza Webster in 1832. They placed a sign atop their store that read “New Town Stores”, and the name was adopted with the space removed.
Transport
Newtown is serviced by a train station, just three stops into the City and there are many buses along King Street.
Housing
Although there are a few earlier buildings in Newtown, the most rapid development came in the late 19th century, with many former farms and other large properties being subdivided and developed as row-houses, known popularly as “terrace houses”. With their predominance of Victorian-era houses with stuccoed facades, balconies of iron lace and moulded architectural ornaments, many Newtown streets are similar to those of other well-known inner-city suburbs like Glebe, Paddington and Balmain.
Recreation
Newtown is renowned for its eclectic shopping and diverse recreational activities. King Street offers a shopping strip with designer boutiques, vintage stores and speciality shops. The suburb is dotted with street art and iconic arts and theatre spaces. There are also a variety of green spaces and a buzzing nightlife with pubs, bars and performance venues.
Schools
Newtown Public School and Newtown High School of the Performing Arts are just some of the schools located in Newtown with a range of other nearby schools, both public and private catering to a range of interests and academic needs.
